The Western Heritage Center has approximately 24,000 photographs depicting life in the Yellowstone River Valley and the Northern High Plains.  The photographs document businesses, transportation, famous people, events, public buildings, farming and ranching operations, historical events, and recreation.  Much of the collection focuses on Yellowstone County, Montana. The collection documents the communities of Billings, Laurel, Reed Point, Cooke City, Red Lodge, Miles City, and Colstrip, as well as the Musselshell River Valley and Yellowstone National Park. Of special interest is a photograph album once belonging to the noted western artist, Joseph Henry Sharp.
