The Western Heritage Center does a lot. We’re hosting a day full of diverse programming in an effort to highlight the many facets of the work done by this important organization. Participate in everything if you wish, or pick and choose specific programs that interest you… but please join us. We need your support. Participation is free with the minimum contribution of $10 to the WHC through the Yellowstone Valley Gives campaign.

Be a Kid Again
Whether you have kids in your family or just consider yourself ‘young at heart’, join us for an education focused tour of the museum! You’ll have the opportunity to participate in some of the fun-filled programming that we offer to field trip participants. Laughter, discovery, and excitement guaranteed.

Women of the Wild West: Calamity Jane, Carolyn Lockhart, Hazel Hunkins and Ethel Hays
Hosted by Executive Director, Kevin Kooistra
The WHC’s original research is consistently shown in our day-to-day operations. We love to uncover and share stories about the people, places, and events that shape our region. One of the ways we do this is through public outreach and programming. Join us for a glimpse into this work through a lecture on the Women of the Wild West.

2:00 pm
Bars, Brothels and Bok Choy walking tour
Hosted by Community Historian, Elisabeth DeGrenier
Our Hoof-it with a Historian series is another example of how we use the original research – and make it fun! Before the skate park and businesses, Billings’ Southside was filled with bars, brothels and even a Chinatown. We’ll wander the remnants of these establishments and bring back to life the stories of these large, and almost forgotten, communities.

5-6pm (open house-style – come anytime)
Behind the scenes tours of the museum
Join us for a guided behind-the-scene tour of the museum. You’ll get the rare opportunity to climb the winding staircase to the tower and take a peek into the archives. You’ll learn about the work being done and the various ways you can engage with and use resources available at the WHC. Forgive the mess – preservation in progress!

6-8 pm
Pints for Preservation
Have fun. Do good. Join us for a pint, popcorn, and trivia fun!
As a way to wrap up the busy day, we’ll be raising a pint of beer in celebration of you, the community member who keeps our preservation gears going. Join us for some friendly trivia based on recent research, new acquisitions to the collections, and some general region-related information. You’re bound to have a blast!
